Undeniably, the mass communication industry holds a prominent position in the society today. In a democratic country like India, the power to discuss and disseminate can be executed only if there is a medium which enables the citizens, and encourages them to do so, due to which the importance of mass communication and media is this country is self-explanatory.


The scope of mass communication in India is vast, as the industry has witnessed a staggering growth and a steep rise over the past decades. Media is a part and parcel of daily life. What is mass communication?

Mass communications is the transmission of information to large numbers of people through the mass media. Mass media includes newspapers, magazines, television, radio, film, websites, and any technology that allows for the dissemination of information to the public. Within the mass media are channels or vehicles of mass communication. These channels include news reports, books, movies, television programs, music videos, advertisements, and articles in magazines and newspapers and on websites.

The field of mass communication includes advertising, corporate and institutional media, electronic media, journalism, production management, public relations, telecommunication and visual communication.

Degree options in mass communication

The following are the degree options in the field of mass communication.

Associate’s Degree:

Associate’s degrees in mass communications are available, some of which are designed to allow the student to transfer to a four-year institution as a junior. Today, more employers are looking for people with bachelor’s degrees.

Bachelor’s Degree:

Most bachelor’s degrees in mass communications offer a choice of specializations, ranging from journalism to public relations to advertising. Some programs are broad-based, while others are more focused. Degrees in journalism are also available, as are degrees in media studies. Media studies degrees tend to focus more on the operation of mass media, but specifics vary by school. Some schools combine studies in mass communication and mass media.

Master’s Degree:

Schools that offer a master’s degree in mass communications typically offer several areas of study to choose from. Each school has its own specialties which include advertising, media studies, strategic communication management, professional media practice etc.

Doctorate Degrees:

Doctorate degrees in mass communications are also available and often prepare candidates for university teaching and research positions.


Bachelor’s degree or post graduate degree is required to pursue a career in mass communication. Additional course work, specialized training or experience, fieldwork or internship increases one’s opportunities in the field. There are a number of universities and institutes offering training in this field. Minimum eligibility for Bachelor degree in is 10+2 and for Post graduate degree courses a Bachelor degree is essential. Some institutes also provide one year certificate courses for which eligibility is 10+2.
