These cats like silence and they prefer a simple lifestyle. They rarely meow, except in special situations or if it’s a female cat in mating, which often sounds like a Siamese cat with its loud meowing.
Persian cats hate noise, noisy kids and the sound of the vacum cleaner. They are perfect for living in a flat and they don’t mind to be alone for a while, although, like all other cats, they always prefer having company.
Although they aren’t famous for their intelligence, Persian cats can manage many situations and they know very well how to get exactly what they want with their look, no matter if it’s the food in the fridge or a toy in a wardrobe. They have been considered one of the most popular breeds for a long time, but there haven’t been many of them recently. The main reason for this are some new and rare breeds which have become more attractive, especially those with semi-long hair that are easy to comb, take care of and prepare for the exhibition. Besides, many people don’t like a modern extreme Persian cat type, with a very short nose which may cause problems with breathing and big and constantly wet eyes.
According to the breed standard, the Persian cat’s middle big to big body should be short, although this is not always the case. Their body is compact and chubby, with a short neck, symmetrical shoulders and short thick legs, known as “cobby” in the felinological jargon. The judges prefer Persian cats with a very short tail, shorter than the body, which is thick, wide, hairy and round at the top.
The breed features
The shape of the Persian cat’s head has become an arguable issue among the breeders in recent years. The standard has always been the large, round and wide head, with a flat face, but different interpretations influenced the change of the Persian cat type. Like with all breeds, a personal preference has led to types with more or less extreme features. An extreme type is nothing new and it has always had its supporters and its adversaries. Those who breed cats with extreme features, appreciate them very much and enjoy having them, and those who don’t claim that they would never breed them.
The fact is that the extreme type has become so common in European countries that it is considered normal. The ideal Persian cat’s face is flat, with mild expression, and the standard has always demanded the short nose, but it is arguable how short it should be. It is normally considered that it should be shorter than with other breeds, but the breeders see this in different ways and they prefer various nose type, so that short became even shorter for decades.
Americans placed it exactly between the eyes. FIFe (Feline International Federation) thinks that it shouldn’t be placed above the upper eyelid border, or under the lower eyelid border, while GCCF (Governing Council of the Cat Fancy) thinks that the upper nose border placed above the lower eye border is a qualification disadvantage. The refined Persian cat features nowadays are the result of the selection which has lasted for years and a controlled breeding. We would have barely recognized the cats of this breed if we had seen them a hundred years ago.
However, not all Persian cats belong to the extreme type. There are those with less extreme features as well, with moderate appearance.
An old traditional Persian cat type, as it is sometimes called, can be used as a cross-breeding material, which also includes feature improvement of other breeds, and maybe that is the reason why it is still bred. Some even suggest that it should be classified as a special, “traditional long-haired breed”.
These cats maturate slowly and they are rarely ready for mating before the first year. They usually have two or three kittens, although there are record cases with 10-12 kittens. The kittens develop more slowly than with other breeds and they spend more time with their mother.
